Fun facts from the dog world

The dog – man's best friend and a pet who quickly won our hearts. We feel we know everything about them and nothing could surprise us any more. The opposite may be true. Dive into the remarkable life of dogs and find out how many of the following facts will surprise and intrigue you.

Can your dog fall in love?
We all know the scene where a dog keeps running after the female from the next street. We put his escapes down to instinct, but what if there's more to it? Scientists who have studied this topic have found that dogs, too, can form deep and lasting bonds with other dogs and are capable of deeper feelings – all without the influence of the reproductive instinct.

Can a dog tell when we're ill?
It's common knowledge that dogs can be helpful companions for people with disabilities, but did you know that your dog can alert you to changes in your body? Dogs sense these changes through a person's scent, which changes depending on what is happening in their body. The most fascinating area attracting more and more attention is the ability of some dogs to detect cancer.

Do dogs see in colour or in black and white?
For many years it was assumed that dogs see the world only like an old black-and-white photograph. Various scientific studies using an electron microscope have shown that dogs, just like us, perceive colours, but in a very limited range. Their vision can be compared to people with a particular type of colour blindness – they have trouble telling green and red apart, as this ability is weakened. In the world they perceive, various shades of blue, yellow and grey prevail.

Do dogs dream?
According to experts, yes. Dogs can, just like us humans, dreamwhile they sleep. In their sleep they probably relive various adventures and experiences they've had recently. They may dream about chasing a cat, romping with a ball, playing with a doggy friend – or they may dream about a bowl of food. Perhaps the hardest part of this question is explaining why dogs dream at all.

How does a dog cool down?
By breathing with the tongue hanging out and the well-known panting with an open mouth, a dog's body cools down. The tongue is key in this mechanism and plays a very important role. Rapid breathing and the hanging tongue cause moisture to evaporate, allowing body heat to be released. By evaporating moisture from the tongue, a dog regulates its body temperature. Dogs have sweat glands only on their paws.

Is a dog's nose print unique?
Yes, it is! A dog's nose print is just as unique and individual as the fingerprints of two people, and will never be the same.  Every nose print is unique and is regarded as proof of identity of a particular dog. With a little patience and training, you can even make a nose print of your dog as a work of art.

Did you know that laws don't just apply to people but to animals too? For example, in the Californian town of Ventura County there's a rule that cats and dogs are not allowed to mate without a permit. How they enforce it is a mystery to us.
