Do you look at your four-legged furry friend in amazement and smile at the position they've just fallen asleep in? Their sleeping habits can reveal how they feel physically and mentally. If you have a dog at home, watch what position they sleep in. You may be surprised at how much it says about them.

1. Sleeping on the side
If your dog likes to sleep on their side, it means they feel relaxed and comfortable in their surroundings. A dog that chooses this position is just the right temperature – neither too hot nor too cold. In this position they're completely relaxed, the belly is exposed and the dog isn't on guard. Sleeping on the side is quite vulnerable for dogs, as their vital organs are exposed, so they only sleep like this in a safe environment. In this position your pet enters the REM phase and dreams, which is why you may notice gentle twitching of the paws.

2. The lion pose
In this position the dog rests on their belly with the front paws stretched forward. A dog in this position isn't in deep sleep, just resting. Your dog lies down like this when they know they may need to jump up or react quickly.

3. Sleeping belly-up
The dog sleeps on their back with the belly up and paws in the air. Even though this position may look uncomfortable, quite the opposite is true. It's a sign of real comfort and relaxation. Since the belly is considered a dog's most vulnerable spot, they can only sleep like this in an environment where they feel truly safe and fully trust their surroundings. Dogs also use this position when they need to cool down.

4. Curled up in a ball
This is considered the safest position, allowing dogs to hide all their vital organs (torso, limbs, tail and head) in case of attack or danger. Curling up into a ball in this position also helps the dog maintain body temperature, especially in cold, rainy and windy weather. If it's warm enough, a dog sleeping in this position prefers safety and stays alert to its surroundings. It's a common and natural position for dogs.

5. The superman pose
The dog lies with the belly pressed to the ground. The front and back legs are stretched out. Dogs that need to cool down take this position, and it often happens to little puppies that have fallen asleep while playing. If your pup often sleeps in this position, it means they're lively, playful and energetic. Dogs also use this position for a short rest so they're ready for the next adventure.
